She is also the founder of DSpeaks, an online portal for discussions on women’s health, relationships, sexuality and culture and society.

Please give us some background about yourself

Darline Turner

My name is Darline Turner, I am a 47 y.o. mama of 2 (a 10 year old and a 7 year old).

I support high risk pregnant women on prescribed bed rest online and in their homes (locally).

When did you realize that you were having trouble conceiving? Did you share this with your family or friends?

I was 29 when I was told that I would not carry a pregnancy to term because I had large fibroid tumors in my uterus. I was devastated.

I wasn’t dating at the time and knew that I wanted to have a baby sometime in the future. I was simply crushed.

I shared this with family and friends and they were supportive, but honestly, I felt all alone and broken as a woman.

I did eventually become pregnant (obviously) but did suffer 2 miscarriages. I would not have made it had it not been for the support of women I found online in a chat group for women with fibroids having difficulty getting pregnant.

We are still friends today and I am happy to report that we all have children.

What have you done to improve your chances of getting pregnant? Did you follow a particular treatment?

When I was first told that I would never carry a pregnancy to term, I was told to have a hysterectomy. Luckily I consulted with a specialist who completely refuted that suggestion.

I tried several different hormone treatments, was offered a myomectomy to remove the fibroids (but I couldn’t afford to take the 8-12 weeks off work that the surgery required at that time) and eventually managed my bleeding, cramping and pain with herbs and acupuncture.

This also regulated my periods so that I ovulated. I got married 6 years after the initial diagnosis and treatments and while I did get pregnant, I lost that child. I then had the myomectomy to remove the fibroids.

Have you been able to get pregnant? How long did it take? Any side effects?

I got pregnant 3 weeks after I had the myomectomy with my daughter, now 10 years old.

I had a second pregnancy 2 years later which ended in miscarriage, and then got pregnant with my son the following year. He is now 7.

How did you feel when you got pregnant? How did people react?

How to Get Pregnant and Carry Till Full Term After 2 Miscarriages

I was thrilled but terrified when I got and stayed pregnant. I told my family but waited to tell other people until I was in my second trimester.

Most people who knew me and my journey were thrilled for me and very supportive.

I was high risk with both pregnancies, had some bleeding and preterm contractions with my daughter and delivered her at 36 weeks, 6 days.

My son was a very uncomplicated pregnancy. However I was 40 when I had him. He was a term baby.

Advice for others: What should others trying to get pregnant do? And do’s and dont’s?

I personally say, “don’t give up!” If I had given up when I was 29 and listened to my doctor, I never would have had my children who are my heart.

It was a long, hard, difficult, frustrating, sad, insane time trying to get pregnant.

Again, stick with it. It’s just when you can’t believe you’ll get pregnant (i.e. immediately after surgery!!) that you do.

In the meantime, do all that you can to strengthen your body. Eat very well. Take a very high grade multi/prenatal vitamin, avoid caffeine, refined sugars.

Quit smoking (if you do). Limit Alcohol intake. Exercise. Lose any and all excess weight.

Get any chronic medical conditions in tight control. The stronger and more “stable” your body is, the better you will fare when you do become pregnant.

Tiffany and Zach succeeded in getting pregnant after trying for a long 7 years.

They have tried IUI, IVF and even FET. Now, they are 29 weeks pregnant!

You can read Tiffany’s blog at http://thepiferfamily.blogspot.com/

Please give us some background about yourself

My name is Tiffany Pifer, I just turned 29. My husband and I married May of 2006 – he is my best friend.

I work as an office manager at a local company in our town, and my husband is a customer service manager at an environmental company.

We tried for 7 years to get pregnant, several treatments… one pregnancy ending in a loss, and now I’m 29 weeks pregnant with our Son.

When did you realize that you were having trouble conceiving? How did you feel? How did family or friends react?

Well, our story is a bit different.

March of 2006 (2 months before we got married) I went in for a normal pap smear. It came back abnormal.Long story short, I had severe Dysplaysia, which was on the verge of being border line cancer cells.

Tiffany and Zach – The Success Story of a Couple Conceiving and Getting Pregnant

My doctor told me right then that getting pregnant would be hard. Zach and I talked a lot about everything.

We knew kids (in the future) is something we wanted. We weren’t prepared to have them at this time so early in our marriage, but with that said, we didn’t want to look back years down the road and wonder ‘what if we would have tried’…

We didn’t want to miss our window of opportunity.

So I got off of birth control and we immediately used the method of ‘not protecting’… The way we looked at it was yea this wasn’t our plan to have children so soon… but maybe it was God’s plan.

We were very open with our family in the beginning… We didn’t quite know the severity of things at this moment…

Our friends and family from the beginning were very supportive.

Overcoming the problem: What did you do to get pregnant? Did you follow a particular treatment?

Over the years, we realized it wouldn’t be ‘so easy’.

We tried naturally for a year, we did several rounds of Clomid and Femera, which is a pill that helps ovulation. We found out my tubes were blocked and I underwent surgery to unblock them….

We finally went to a fertility clinic… had 3 IUI’s; none took. We have done 2 IVF’S and one FET (frozen egg transfer)….

Have you been able to conceive? How long did it take? Did you experience any side effects of the treatment?

We got pregnant on my 2nd IVF…. We were over the moon excited. After 6 years of trying, we were finally pregnant. Sadly it ended in a miscarriage.

We jumped right back into a frozen embryo cycle and one of our little babies took… We are now 29 weeks pregnant with our son.

I had many side effects from treatments… Everything you could possibly think about – moody, hot flashes, emotional, gained weight, lost weight….you name it I had it!!

The “Now”: How do you feel after getting pregnant? How do people react?

I feel so blessed. It still feels so surreal… We are so used to ‘NOT’ getting pregnant, it took us a long time to except we were finally pregnant…

And after losing our first baby, we didn’t get emotionally attached to this baby for quite some time. You stay guarded in fear that something bad will happen…you don’t want another broken heart.

People are beyond supportive. We have received so much love and support from family, friends and complete strangers. We are truly blessed.

We never knew why God had us wait so long for this miracle, but it just makes sense now… I can’t wait to see his beautiful face and hold him. He is truly a blessing from above.

Advice for others: What should others trying to get pregnant do? Any do’s and dont’s?

Relax (I know easier said than done)… We thankfully were blessed with patience and faith along this bumpy path.

Tiffany Pifer – Getting Pregnant After Trying for 7 Years and After Several IUI IVF and FET

Throughout all the heartache, I never lost faith in God and his plan for us.

Hang onto hope, don’t ever give up. I know so many are leery of modern day medicine and infertility treatments…

It took us along time to go down that path, not to mention it’s pricey. But it’s so worth it. The doctors are so intelligent, and most of them truly care about you and your desires to be a mother.

Have faith…never be afraid to ask to many questions. Find a support group on line, you would be amazed at how many out there are going through the same thing as you.

Your fertile friends will say things at times that hurt, they are just trying to be a friend… It does hurt at times, but please know they only mean well…

If anyone is putting you down or making you feel stressed let those friends go. You need positive friends and family in your life during these moments… People who will always lift you up when you are weak.

Don’t’ focus on the whole staircase, just climb one step at a time and don’t forget to have fun. Trying to have a baby doesn’t have to be all ‘work’…

It’s important to not forget your partner. NO BLAMING. God choose y’all for a reason. He see’s something amazing in you to be able to go down such a difficult path.

I know it doesn’t seem like rainbows and butterfly’s, but the strength that you get out of this journey and the person it molds you into are worth every step.

Anything else that you would like to share with the readers?

Like I said above, just don’t give up. Infertility is difficult…but don’t let it define you.

God is a BIG God and he does have amazing plans in store for you.

Editorial Note: Thanks Tiffany for your story, and the lovely advise. We are sure it would be helpful to all couples in this situation. We wish you the very best with your pregnancy, and the years ahead…

We’re pregnant” to “We have a baby… now what?”, and the whole crazy story is chronicled on her blog, This Place is Now a Home.

Please give us some background about yourself

I just turned 30 and I work in Human Resources, coordinating and delivering internal training at a management consulting firm.

I live outside of Boston with my husband, our 2 1/2 year old son and labradodle, Schnitzel.

Realizing that everything is not ok: When did you realize that you were having trouble conceiving? How did you feel about it?

I was on birth control for over 10 years, starting before I was sexually active because I had very irregular and painful periods.

During that time I was extremely diligent and almost never missed a single pill. It worked well for me and I had periods every month like I was supposed to.

Kate with her Husband Benjamin and Newborn Son Owen – Overcoming Infertility to Get Pregnant

When I went off birth control in January 2009, I knew almost immediately that there was a problem when I did not get a period at all.

I had read that it can take some time (up to 6 months) for some women to get their period again after going off hormonal birth control, so I guessed that was the reason, but I was very confused and anxious to get started on the babymaking process. I hadn’t even begun if I wasn’t ovulating / getting a period!

After 3-4 months, I scheduled an appointment with my gynecologist to discuss. At that appointment she told me to wait a bit longer.

The waiting when I KNEW there was an issue was THE WORST.

A month or two later I asked her to please run some tests to see what was going on, and she referred me to a reproductive endocrinologist (RE) at a local fertility center. He did a battery of tests and finally came to the conclusion that I have “Lean Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)“.

It was a confusing diagnosis because I didn’t have a lot of the physical symptoms that often go along with PCOS (I was not overweight and did not have excess hair growth, I did not have out-of-whack hormones or other thyroid issues… I simply had cysts filling up my ovaries instead of healthy eggs, and my body wasn’t ovulating).

Thankfully, he realized that my body likely wasn’t going to ovulate on my own, and suggested I start using Clomid to force my body to ovulate.

Did you share this with your family or friends? How did they react?

During the 6 months it took for us to diagnose my fertility issues, I didn’t really share this information with anyone. My husband, obviously, was there every step of the way.

But I didn’t know many women who had gone through this, and it felt like admitting that my body had some huge flaw. I wasn’t ready to share. So I started a blog about my experiences (http://thisplaceisnowahome.wordpress.com).

I didn’t tell the people closest to me about my journey, but I had to get my thoughts and feelings out somewhere. Writing felt GOOD, and I came to know many, many women in my situation going through the same things. They became my sisters and my support through this process.

I think the main reason I didn’t tell my family and friends was that I was dying to have that, “Surprise! I’m pregnant!” moment. I had been dreaming of that moment my whole life.

I was young to get married and I was one of the first of my friends to have/want a baby. I wanted that moment in the spotlight.

After I received my diagnosis, I opened up to my siblings and my mother. They were all incredibly supportive and it was nice to have some of that support in person rather than just through the computer, but the infertility community online was really the only place I could go with the nitty gritty details and daily questions / concerns.

Since I was (am) young and healthy aside from the PCOS, my RE felt confident that once we found the right dosage of Clomid and I started ovulating, I would be able to get pregnant on my own.

We discussed future options if that didn’t work (IUI, injections, IVF), but in the end we decided to go step-by-step and see if we even needed to go there. As it turned out, we didn’t.

The first dosage of Clomid was not enough for me to ovulate, but the second dosage was. The very first time I ovulated (maybe ever?), I got pregnant. The RE was right.

How long did it take to get pregnant? Did you experience any side effects of Clomid?

All in all, it was only 9 months from when I went off birth control to finding out I was pregnant. I know there are SO many women who struggle for so much longer, and I am grateful every day that my fertility struggles ended there. I was so, so lucky.

I experienced only very minimal side effects from Clomid (moodiness, thirst, etc.), but it was a very small price to pay for what that medicine did for my body.

The “Now”: How do you feel after getting pregnant? How do people react?

The struggle to get pregnant absolutely colored my own view of pregnancy, and infancy and motherhood. While friends were complaining of morning sickness and exhaustion, I was thankful every day that I got to experience those things.

Kate’s Happy Family – A Great Example of Not Losing Courage While Trying to Conceive

I absolutely relished being pregnant. I loved it so much. Looking back, I am so thankful for the struggle it took for me to get there because it made the end result that much sweeter.

After we got pregnant I did share our fertility ups and downs with friends and family, and I directed them to my blog.

In fact, I’ll tell just about anyone who will listen these days, and I always try to toss it into conversations because I think the best thing we can all do, as a community, is TALK ABOUT IT. It shouldn’t be such a secret. It’s nothing to be ashamed of.

And once you start talking? You will be amazed at how many others have suffered similar stories in silence.

Advice for others: What should others trying to get pregnant do? And do’s and dont’s?

My biggest piece of advice for those still fighting to get pregnant is the hardest advice to follow. (No, it’s not “just relax”. That is the most ridiculously frustrating piece of advice I’ve ever heard.).

It’s this. _Try not to let it take over your life_. And try not to let your own struggles turn into jealousy and hate for others who aren’t struggling in the same way.

First of all, you never know what those people have gone through to get to where they are. And secondly, once you do grow your family (however it grows!), the joy will overpower all of this time spent struggling.

It’s all worth it in the end. Just try to keep your life outside of babymaking as happy and healthy as it can be.

You can’t control it, so don’t let it control you.

Jennifer “Jay” Palumbo is a freelance writer, former stand-up comic and infertility activist.

She was named one of the “10 Standout Stand-ups Worth Watching” by BACKSTAGE Magazine, she performed in Covergirl’s “Stand Up for Beauty” and her blog, The 2 Week Wait, shares her sense of humor, honesty and personal struggle of her own journey to get pregnant.

Jay has brought her wit, compassion and eagerness to help those who are going through fertility treatment to her current role as a Patient Care Manager with Fertility Authority.

Please give us some background about yourself

At present, I’m 39 years old.

I started trying to get pregnant (or should I say, “working towards getting pregnant” as it sounds more positive!) when I was 36 years old.

I am a freelance writer, a former stand-up comic (which was helpful when going through hormone shots) and I’m the Patient Care Manager at Fertility Authority, where I help match people with Reproductive Endocrinologists in their area.

I also have my own blog, The 2 Week Wait, that I’ve been writing since 2010. There, I have tried to bring some humor in my own personal struggle to get pregnant as well as what it’s like now being a new mom.

When did you realize you were having trouble conceiving? How did you feel?

Jay With Her Son Michael – A Lesson in How to Get Pregnant in Spite of Difficulties

We had been trying for 6 months, and my doctor suggested we start with Clomid and timed cycles.

After doing 5 of those, we moved on to three inseminations. I really felt that we would not need IVF, but around the third IUI, that’s when it started to hit me that we may have a real problem on our hands.

I had never been pregnant, nothing seemed to be getting me pregnant and there was no clear issue as to why I wasn’t getting pregnant.

This all coincided with almost everyone I knew getting pregnant around me (well, at least it felt that way!), and I was very hesitant to share with anyone our struggles. I didn’t want them not to be able to share their joy of motherhood or pregnancy, and I felt embarrassed that I couldn’t accomplish something that seemed like it should be so easy.

At the time, I was working at a job where so many of my co-workers were pregnant. Someone joked that “there must be something in the water” and I felt like I somehow was stuck drinking at the infertile vending machine.

Did you share your struggle with friends and family? How did they react?

Before my first IVF was when I confided in a few friends and my parents as to what we were going through. We were very selective in who we told as we did not want tons of people to update on every failed cycle.

I also felt strongly about NOT telling those who were either new parents or also trying to conceive, as I didn’t want them to feel awkward around me. In addition, even though we knew everyone would be well-intentioned, we also wanted to limit the amount of insensitive questions or advice.

Newborn Michael – or MJ as He is Fondly Known

We knew people didn’t mean to be hurtful, telling us things like, “Have you tried leaving your socks on?”, “Just relax and it will happen!”, “Cut out soda and you’ll get pregnant!” or “Why don’t you just adopt?” (To be clear – nothing is wrong with adoption but that’s a personal decision and at that point, we hadn’t even tried in vitro yet).

But even when they meant well, these comments were not helpful. For these reasons, we kept it a tight group that knew, that were told what to say and what not to say and that were all incredibly supportive.

I am certain some were disappointed that we didn’t confide in them earlier, but I have no regrets about who we told and who we didn’t. It sincerely was a small group of people who knew what was going on, and that was exactly what we needed at the time.

What did you do to increase the chance of getting pregnant? Did you follow a particular treatment?

For each of my IVF’s, we did a slightly different protocol. What’s important to know about in vitro is that it is also diagnostic. You don’t know how your body will react, how many eggs you’ll produce or what the fertility report will look like until you’re actually in the process of doing it.

For my third IVF, which was the one I got pregnant on, we changed a few things around in my medication – we added something called “estrogen priming”, and I still ended up getting the same exact embryos I had the last two cycles.

So honestly, I can’t say what worked and what didn’t as much as I think the odds were in our favor that the third one would be the one that would stick.

What we learned from all three IVF’s was that even though my blood work was always fine (a good FSH and AMH), I would only produce one embryo no matter how many eggs were retrieved in the IVF process.

This indicates that there is some egg quality issue. My best chances to get pregnant, as it turned out, was in fact IVF.

They do say cut down on caffeine, maintain a good weight, etc. and there are tons of anecdotal advice ranging from taking cough syrup to eating pineapple, but for us, it was always going to be IVF. At least that’s my opinion.

How long did it take to get pregnant? Did you experience any side effects of the treatment?

After three years of trying to get pregnant and three IVF’s, I was able to have a successful pregnancy.

Other than the progesterone I took for the first 10 weeks making me EXTREMELY emotional (it’s not normal to cry about your pajamas not being clean), I didn’t have any side effects from fertility treatment that I’m aware of.

How do you feel after getting pregnant? How have people reacted?

Even though my pregnancy was not without its minor complications, I enjoyed every single moment.

Even when I was throwing up quite often, I was so grateful that there was no complaining. I often teased that I paid good money for morning sickness so I might as well enjoy it!

MJ at One – Result of Successful Conception After Several IUI and IVF Iterations

I have been very open after the fact about what we went through as I’m proud of my husband and I. It was NOT easy, and put a huge strain on us physically, emotionally and financially.

That we stuck with it, never gave up and were fortunate enough to have a baby is something I want to share with others – especially those who might have given up on their own struggles to conceive.

Some friends and family seem a little uncomfortable when I share our story. I guess it’s either because they don’t know what to say or it could simply be that they really don’t feel comfortable using words like “uterus” or “sperm” at a dinner party. I can appreciate that.

However, most have been fascinated with what the process entailed or impressed that we went through all that we did.

All in all, I think everyone knows what our son means to us and how lucky we feel to have him, and that’s the most important thing.

What would be your advice for other couples working towards getting pregnant?

The number one piece of advice I give to EVERYONE going through infertility treatment is every day, ask yourself, “What do I need to do to stay sane today?”

If you need to talk about it, talk about it. If you need to keep it to yourself, then do so. If you need a manicure, a box of chocolates and to watch some crappy infomercials – so be it.

Whatever you feel is legal and can get you through the process, then I say do it. It doesn’t make you a bad person, it is just doing what you need to do to cope.

Do you have any do’s and don’ts for us?

Don’t go to baby showers (you don’t need that). Send a nice gift and make your excuses. If you MUST go, stand near the bar or bottle of wine as much as possible. (Of course, I’m joking… slightly).

Again, being good to yourself, asking what will help you get through all of this, checking in on your marriage to make sure you’re talking about other things than your reproductive parts and not beating yourself up are the best pieces of advice I can give.

I also personally found the online infertility community extremely helpful. There is FertileThoughts.com which is extremely supportive and almost addictive.

But there is my personal favorite which was and still is the women I’ve connected with on Twitter. If anyone reading this article would like to connect with my friends, you can find me at @the2weekwait and I’ll make the introduction!

Anything else that you would like to share with us?

I know it’s not easy to hope. Trust me – I so know this but I think given your options, it’s the best one to go with.

Ultimately, there may be an ending to your story that exceeds your expectations… even if it’s not the one you intended on.

I firmly believe that the question isn’t “if” you’ll be a mom, it’s more like “how”. It could be through donor eggs, surrogacy or adoption.

If you want to be a mom, you WILL find a way to be a mom.

This is coming from a medical professional, so this is real advise. However, as always, you should consult your physician and gynecologist before implementing any pregnancy-related advice.

Things Covered in this “How To Get Pregnant” Video

Here are the things Dr. Lee discusses in this video:

How some couples conceive naturally, without any help

The different ways to get pregnant

Natural way of conception (through sexual intercourse) – the role of sperms, eggs, ovaries, Fallopian tubes, vagina, cervix and uterus

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) – What it is, how it is done, why it is useful

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) – What it is, how it is done, why it is useful

How to know if it is the time to move from conceiving naturally to other methods

Factors that decide if you should see a doctor:

Number of months you have failed to get pregnant

Your age

Suspicion of any problems, and

Your preference & anxiousness

Tertia Albertyn is a published author, award-winning blogger and dedicated baby-maker, apart from being a seasoned infertility veteran and now mother to three kids.

In five years, nine IVFs and many losses it took to conceive her twins, she has seen and done it all in terms of fertility treatment. She writes a popular blog (www.tertia.org) which was rated the top blog in South Africa in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

She has also written a book ‘So Close: Infertile and Addicted to Hope’ based on her blog and chronicling her infertility journey.

Please tell us about yourself.

I am 44 years old and I run an egg donor and surrogacy program in South Africa (www.nurture.co.za).

When did you realize that you were having trouble conceiving? How did you feel? Did you share this with your family or friends?

Tertia Albertyn Fought Infertility and is a Proud Mother of Three

I think I always had a sneaking suspicion that it might be a bit difficult for me to fall pregnant. However, I had no idea how hard it would be, or how much pain I would go through to get to my dream of having a child.

At first I thought all I needed was a bit of clomid to help me conceive. When that didn’t work, the realization sunk in that my journey would not be an easy one and I was devastated. And terrified.

I am a sharer so I shared it with everyone.

Overcoming the problem: What did you do to get pregnant? Did you follow a particular treatment?

I went straight to the best fertility expert I could find. I told him that I would do whatever it took to have a baby.

I started at the beginning (with all the tests and diagnostics) and I followed the usual path – clomid, then IUI, then IVF.

I eventually had my twins after my 9th IVF.

The results: How long did it take to conceive? Did you experience any side effects of the treatment?

I had twins on my 9th IVF.

I had three pregnancies losses prior to my twins – an ectopic, an early miscarriage and then a loss of twins, one died in utero at 21 weeks, the other born prematurely at 26 weeks and died 10 days after birth.

Side effects? apart from the depression, loss of friends, weight gain, slight insanity? None at all

How do you feel about infertility? How are you helping others overcome it?

Patience Pays – Tertia Conceived the Twins on her 9th IVF

I have shared my story with everyone – I have even written a book about it.

I am immensely proud of my determination to succeed, I am not ashamed of my infertility at all. I blog about it, write about it and now help others become parents.

My advice is always to go to the best fertility specialist you can find – time is not your friend when it comes to TTC.

Unfortunately our eggs have an expiry date. Do not waste your time and money with doctors who do not specialize in fertility / infertility.

Dawn Reklai is a blogger who writes about male and female infertility, and provides tips to increase fertility and to successfully conceive.

You can read her blog at How To Conceive A Baby.

This is the story of her attempts at getting pregnant – she tells us about what seems to work for her and her husband, and what doesn’t.

Please tell us something about yourself

I am 38 years old.

I had a few boyfriends just out of high school and then didn’t date until I met my husband 6 years ago. We got married in June of 2007.

When did you start planning and trying for a baby?

My husband is 10 years older than me, so having a baby was first on the list.

However, I met him while I was overseas. Medical care there is not the same as here in the states, and we didn’t think anything of not conceiving right away.

I knew it could take up to a year to conceive. We decided to move to the states in 2008 so we put “trying” on the back burner.

When did you find out that everything was not fine? Did you or your husband undergo any treatment?

Life was hard when we moved back here – we have had job changes and moves but we still tried. We have been in our current house for 3 years, and here is where we finally started fertility testing.

We found out we have male factor, but we had to quit testing due to yet another job change. So I never finished testing me. I have no idea if I have any problems.

My doctor put me on Femara (drug very much like Clomid) for 2 months, and that didn’t help (many side effects to that drug, and now hesitant to use Clomid!)

He put hubby on

. We did that for several months and still nothing (but I do believe that fertility blend is good even though it didn’t help us!)

What are you currently doing to improve your fertility and increases the chances of getting pregnant?

All doctors seem to say the same thing, and IVF is probably our only option.

That is what started me on the quest to find natural remedies for infertility, however I haven’t had a chance to try any of them because hubby and I just started back to work after a 4 month layoff (we both work at the same company)

We were without money, and more importantly, we were without health insurance. Not to mention our fertility doctors are 100 miles away.

So, I want to try “The Pregnancy Miracle” a product I promote on my site. I can’t find any bad reviews for it. If that doesn’t work I would like to try a

She also offers many herbal / vitamin supplements that increase the chances of getting pregnant, improve fertility, and more.

You can find out more about her at TryingToConceive.com

What is your age and what do you do?

Mama Kath from TryingToConceive.com

I celebrated my 60th birthday in June, and for the last 15 years have been helping countless couples around the world conceive naturally using education, herbs and vitamins.

TryingToConceive.com was born in 1998 as I was attempting to conceive at the age of 45.

When did you realize that everything was not ok?

Trying to conceive was never my problem. At most it took me three months of trying – my problem was “staying pregnant” for more than eight weeks.

My first miscarriages were with my first husband who refused a genetic test (mine tested okay), so I assumed the problem was on his side.

It was such a SHOCK when I began miscarrying (like all the others) with my new partner the month of my 40th year! That’s when I realized it must be me!

I put it out of my mind for 5 years and what happened next opened my door to destiny. After a slew of tests (following what would be my “last” miscarriage), the medical profession labeled me a “spontaneous aborter” with “unexplained infertility”!

Yikes! Being labeled as such left me feeling hopeless and helpless.

Mama Kath – Helping Women Conceive and Get Pregnant

After our wedding (5 years later) we decided to try one last time. While trying, I made an appointment with one, two and then a third local fertility specialist who suggested we invest tens of thousands of dollars for a “chance” at conception.

I told all three doctors, “You’re not listening to me, conception is not my problem. I need help staying pregnant.” I walked away thinking I’ll show them!

I watched my Aunt give birth to a healthy child at the age of 48, so my trying to conceive at 45 did not seem outrageous.

Did you share it with your family / friends?

Not really, mainly because of my age and history of loss. Trying to conceive is such an emotionally charged state. Thoughts of getting pregnant penetrated everything I did. All I wanted to talk about was mucus and didn’t want to bother family, friends and co-workers.

Fortunately, this was the time when Al Gore “invented” the internet ;o) I began surfing the web (I know, old-school term) and discovered a pre-pregnancy group of woman.

Because of my age and experience, I found myself answering anatomy, timing and patience questions. Within five days, 40 women were checking in with me every morning.

These women provided me with their basal temperature, mucus quality and many other intimate details so I could track their cycle. It was then the idea to create a virtual “TTC friendly community” started percolating.

You see, I never went past the 8th week and real life has a way of assaulting you with reminders of what you haven’t achieved. I became known on the internet as “Momma Kath a/k/a Mama Kath” and my mantra was “You are not alone!”.

What did you do to improve your chance of getting pregnant?

I did the exact opposite of what you should do to get pregnant. I was working full time and in my spare time (lunch hours, before and after work and weekends) answering emails and filling orders.

Mama Kath – How To Increase Fertility

Many nights I was answering emails till 3am and then up at 6am to get ready for work.

I left myself no time to get pregnant, instead provided a dynamic forum that I wish I had had in my 20s that allowed women to Teach What you Know, Learn What you Don’t.

The herbal packages were designed after discovering dramatic changes to my pre-menstrual cramping and the quality of menses.

One day, I was telling the women to try this and that and someone said “Mama Kath, put something together and we’ll buy it.” so I did.

These herbal / vitamin regimen packages have enabled countless couples to get pregnant and stay pregnant. Turns out, “TryingToConceive.com” was my baby.

One Mother’s Day morning, I opened my email and a woman I had helped the previous year sent me an email titled: “I want you to see your work”. There was a picture attached, so I clicked on it and this baby’s face filled my screen.

When I looked in his eyes, I heard “Thank You!”. I cleaned my entire house that day. Just recalling this brings tears to my eyes, sniff sniff.

What can others do to improve their chance of getting pregnant?

Balance and Moderation are Key! For example, if you have a stressful day, offset it with time spent exercising, laughing or soaking in a hot tub (whatever floats your boat!).

If you have a good cry or drink a cup of coffee, balance that out with a glass of water to replenish your fluids.

What I discovered and why, for over a decade couples have turned to me for answers, is the body is quite capable of balance if given what it needs.

The first herbal package developed simply gave women a fertile edge. The second package complimented a clomid cycle and the remaining eight packages address very specific issues.

Trust yourself. If it feels right, it probably is. Making a decision is much healthier than living in limbo. Learn all you can and if it feels right, go for it. Knowledge provides power and confidence.

Embrace adversity, should it arrive, and be open to the new experiences each challenge brings.

There is so much more to say but I will stop here!

Lots of love and positive thoughts,

Mama Kath
